Doctor Who Series 14 Will Conclude With a Two-Part Finale, Directed by Jamie Donoughue

The next series of Doctor Who will culminate in a two-part finale, which is being filmed right now.

The news was revealed by Block 5 director, Jamie Donoughue, who is helming episodes 7 and 8 of Doctor Who Series 14. This will be the first season with Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson as new companion, Ruby Sunday — and the first full run of stories with Russell T Davies as showrunner since the 2009 specials.

Two-part finales were a mainstay of Davies’ original time on the programme, with highlights including Bad Wolf/ The Parting of the Ways and Army of Ghosts/ Doomsday. This is the first two-part finale since 2020’s Ascension of the Cybermen/ The Timeless Children (the Series 14 finale is likely to be less controversial than that story too…), as subsequent showrunners, Steven Moffat, and Chris Chibnall, played around with series structure a bit, resulting in a few one-part finales like The Wedding of River Song and The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos, as well as linked finales (The Name of the Doctor) and multi-part tales (i.e. Flux).

Donoughue is new to Doctor Who, but you might recognise his name from episodes of Endeavour, A Discovery of Witches, and The Last Kingdom. The Doctor Who Filming Locations Twitter feed, however, tweeted that he “sounded so excited about what they’ve done with the series”.

As Bonnie Langford has been seen recently on location, this is seemingly confirmation, too, that Mel Bush will be in the Series 14 finale — perhaps working for UNIT.

Filming is expected to continue for another month, although we don’t know if this includes the 2024 Christmas special.

Series 14 will air in early 2024, with Gatwa making his Doctor Who debut later this year.
