Ncuti Gatwa has spoken about how he decided on what he would wear as the Fifteenth Doctor — and reveals that his initial picks were more traditional costumes.
Gatwa says:
“Months after getting the role, I went to see the producers and get the scripts, and they asked me my thoughts on the show’s costumes. I was talking about Ralph Lauren’s collaboration with Morehouse and Spelman Colleges, two historically Black colleges, which is really preppy. They were like, ‘Cool, but it’s quite traditional.’ I guess I was thinking about catering to the audience that already watches Doctor Who, but they’re like, ‘Let’s push it forward.’ They’re really keen on progress, and it doesn’t always feel like that in the landscape of British television.”
Ultimately, Gatwa’s look was a collaboration between himself and costume designer, Pam Downe.
And yet, we’re not actually sure about his Doctor Who outfit — a checked jacket was revealed to be his official look, but we’ve not seen it all that much. Instead, we’ve been seeing variations of what he’s wearing during on-location filming, including a 1960s ensemble, a period costume, and, most recently… jeans! The first Doctor in jeans? Looks like it…
Bonnie Langford, returning as companion Mel Bush, has also been seen shooting on location in Cardiff.
Whatever happens, we’ve every faith that the Fifteenth Doctor will look very cool when he debits this Christmas. Doctor Who Series 14 is set to air early next year.
