Rufus Hound has revealed he’d love to play the Meddling Monk on TV. Well, of course. I mean,
Hound has been playing the Time Lord for audio company, Big Finish, in numerous ranges including the old Main Range, Missy, Doom Coalition, and Short Trips.
When a fan on Twitter pointed out that the Meddling Monk, despite being one of the most notable creations of 1960s Doctor Who, had only appeared in two TV adventures (The Time Meddler and The Daleks’ Master Plan), and called for his small screen return, Rufus replied:
“Just to let you and the fandom know, if anyone else ever gets to play The Monk on television before me, I will track them down and kill them.”
Well, at least we know how much he loves playing the role!
Indeed, Hound is a big Doctor Who fan and apparently has a Dalek tattoo.
He has appeared in the show itself — as Sam Swift, a highwayman in The Woman Who Lived, proving to be a high point in the serial. When another fan pointed out on Twitter that many thought Swift would turn out to be the Monk, Rufus responded:
“It’s easily retconned, I guess, but the demi-immortality he’s granted at the end of his story needn’t be so complicated a part any [Gallifreyan’s] plan.”
It would be great to see the Monk again. Peter Butterworth was excellent, bringing this glorious character to life; it’s sad, however, that his passing meant we didn’t see the Time Lord again.
At least, for now…
