It’s been (just over) 13 years since Arthur Darvill made his Doctor Who debut as Rory Williams, and now, Darvill is looking to the future, apparently seeing a return to the programme as inevitable.

Fans of the Eleventh Doctor era will be pleased to hear Darvill enthuse:

“I always said that I wouldn’t [return] but I think that changes over time. I’m sure it will happen at some point. [Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and I] have always said we’d have to do it together.”

And Arthur still very much feels like part of the Doctor Who family, a family that never really goes away:

“I did a job with John Simm [aka the Master] recently [on ITV’s superb crime drama, Grace, based on the books by Peter James] and it immediately gives you this shorthand of, ‘We’ve not been in the same room before, but we know each other’.”

Darvill has been in a number of projects with Doctor Who alumni, most prominently Broadchurch with David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker (albeit before she was the Thirteenth Doctor), David Bradley (before he was the First Doctor and before his appearance in Dinosaurs on a Spaceship), and The Eleventh Hour guest, Olivia Colman. The show was written and created by Chris Chibnall, showrunner during the Thirteenth Doctor era.

Personally, I’d love to see Matt, Karen, and Arthur back — there’s was my definitive Doctor Who, my go-to cheer-up era. As we look to the future of Doctor Who, we’re also looking back, especially with the 60th anniversary just around the corner. Might we see some returning Doctors and companions, aside from David Tennant and Catherine Tate? Let’s keep our fingers crossed…
