Will Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels, and More Doctor Who Monsters Get Their Own Spin-Offs?

Reports currently suggest that numerous Doctor Who monsters will get their own spin-off shows under the creative direction of new Who showrunner, Russell T Davies.

It’s no great shock that new spin-offs might be in the works: they’ve been rumoured for some time, bolstered by Davies’ insistence that there should be numerous other tie-in shows in a Marvel-like universe; and the fact that the franchise is receiving an increased budget from Disney+, which has the exclusive international streaming rights for the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors’ era, and possible beyond.

Now, The Mirror suggests that these spin-offs will feature various monsters. An anonymous source says:

“Fans can expect to see Sontarans, Weeping Angels, and Sea Devils in separate series showing what they get up to when the Doctor isn’t there to stop them, along with Daleks and Cybermen.”

The Sea Devils are a curious bunch to get wrapped up in these rumours. They’re not exactly alien invaders and their plans, to retake the Earth from the apes (i.e. us), would surely mean we see their Silurian cousins too (who are absent from this speculative list). Presumably they’re mentioned because they recently appeared in Legend of the Sea Devils.

Okay, so we might take this with a pinch of salt, but The Mirror is typically on the money when it comes to Doctor Who. So there may be truth to the rumours.

We highly doubt a spin-off would see the Cybermen gleefully rubbing their hands together as they invade Earth, or the Daleks gleefully rubbing plungers (which sounds much dodgier than intended) in a similar fashion. But we could see such potential shows being about a band of humans who are resisting the efforts of these monsters. After all, Davies has always been keen to show how invasions impact humanity. His first tenure as showrunner placed people at the heart of every story — even in the far reaches of Krop Tor, it was a band of humans who were at threat from the Beast in the Satan Pit.

Either way, it looks like the Doctor Who universe will expand further in the very near future…
