Yasmin Finney to Star in Short Film, Mars, Created by Singer, Yungblud

Yasmin Finney, who will feature in the Doctor Who 60th anniversary celebrations, is set to star in the short film, Mars.

Mars is a comedy-drama short about self-discovery, set in Blackpool, and follows a day in the life of Charlie Acaster (played by Finney). All Charlie has ever wanted is a regular teenage existence – at least that’s what she thinks. Now one extraordinary night will make her reassess what truly matters.

Yasmin says:

“I am so proud to be a part of Mars and am so excited for everyone to see it.”

Finney will make her Doctor Who sometime next year, playing Rose, seemingly daughter of Donna Noble. Catherine Tate and David Tennant are returning as Donna and the Doctor respectively, for an unknown number of specials — some say just the one special, but at the moment, three is looking likeliest.

The episode or episodes are written by new showrunner, Russell T Davies.

Set to premiere at the London Film Festival in October, Mars is based on an original universe and characters created by British music artist, Yungblud, real name Dominic Harrison (no, me neither), for Mercury Studios. However, it’s actually written by award-winning playwright Chris Bush (Faustus: That Damned Woman) and directed by Abel Rubinstein (Dungarees). Yungblud is credited as a producer, alongside Cat Marshall and Stefan Demetriou.

Rubinstein praises Finney:

“Yasmin is a striking performer. She has the ability to tell a whole story with a single look. She utterly embodied the character of Charlie whilst also bringing so much more. Yasmin’s quick wit and sense of humour gave Charlie a new dimension. She is clearly destined for greatness and I would love the opportunity to work with her again.”

That does bode rather well for her in Doctor Who!

Of course, if you want to check Yamsin in action, she plays Elle Argent in Netflix’s Heartstopper.
