Neil Patrick Harris is to feature in the Doctor Who 60th anniversary special, alongside David Tennant (the Doctor) and Catherine Tate (Donna Noble). And if we’re judging by the photo (above) released by the BBC — our first proper glimpse at the 60th anniversary story — he might just be playing the Celestial Toymaker!

At least, Twitter is confident he’s the Toymaker, a character originally played by Michael Gough who hasn’t been seen since 1966.

Russell T Davies, the new/old showrunner, said:

“It’s my huge honour to open our studio doors for the mighty Neil Patrick Harris… but who, why, what is he playing? You’ll just have to wait. But I promise you, the stuff we’re shooting now is off the scale. Doctor beware!”

But on Instagram, Davies teased more:

“Neil Patrick Harris, welcome to Cardiff! Playing the greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced. Such a great actor, such a great man, it’s an honour and a hoot. Have fun!”

Harris is a big name, having appeared in a number of high-profile productions, including The Matrix Resurrections, A Series of Unfortunate Events, How I Met our Mother, and Gone Girl. Many will recognise him as the lead in Doogie Howser, M.D., while others may know him from his voiceover work, including Batman: The Brave and The Bold, The Simpsons (specifically in Bart the Murderer), and Spider-Man (2003).

And Harris would make a fantastic Toymaker!

We’ve a while to wait to find out exactly what the 60th anniversary will entail, but we expect to see Harris filming in Cardiff and Bristol this week…
