With the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who fast approaching, previous cast members, notably Doctors, are naturally being asked if they’re returning to the show; and Paul McGann guesses that “most of us who are still around will probably be asked to get involved”.

That sounds great, but doesn’t necessarily mean the Eighth Doctor will be in Doctor Who again. It might be a satirical special, like The Five (Ish) Doctors Reboot; a mini-episode like The Night of the Doctor; or a massive convention a la the 50th anniversary.

McGann said:

“Next year is [Doctor Who’s] 60th anniversary so it’s exciting for everyone because we don’t know what’s going to happen next year.

“What will happen [is,] we’ll find out much nearer the time. That’s how showbiz works usually — very eleventh hour. But it’s my guess that most of us who are still around will probably be asked to get involved in things and that’s how it should be because the fans like it that way.”

The next era of Doctor Who will be spearheaded by Russell T Davies, and McGann is similarly optimistic about that:

“I’m made up that it’s Russell T Davies who’s taken charge again because he really knows what he’s doing. And there’s genuine love for it, you know, for Doctor Who. The reason it’s survived and thrived as long as it has is because generally, down the years, people who have genuinely loved it have run it.”

Couldn’t agree more!

Of all the Doctors, the Eighth Doctor feels most deserving of more screentime… and if he is in the 60th anniversary special, we can dream that it leads to his own spin-off, right?
