Though there’s a lot of talk already about Russell T Davies returning to Doctor Who in 2023, and the casting of the Fourteenth Doctor, let’s not forget that there are still three specials featuring Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor to screen next year.

And in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, showrunner Chris Chibnall has updates fans on the progress of the 2022 serials. He says:

“It’s a great feeling when you finish everything in studio. But in some ways, things actually get busier from that point, because all the stuff in post-production has been waiting for you. It’s like another show on top of the first show you did.

“We won’t actually be finished until we picture-lock what we’re currently calling the Centenary Special.”

That Centenary Special refers to the 100th anniversary of the BBC, which will see the final episode of the Whittaker/Chibnall era air. Before that, we have a New Year’s special and an additional episode likely screening over Easter.

From his comments there, it sounds like those first two have been finalised, and it’s just the last Thirteenth Doctor episode that’s yet to be completed.

He added that the music still has to be added, plus CGI. That will probably include Whittaker’s regeneration scene, but we’re yet to hear how that will be managed, given we haven’t heard anything concrete about the next Doctor — just rumours, odds, and plenty of actors saying they’d love to play the role.
