Since the late 1960s, Doctor Who has a small presence in the music world. We’ve had Who’s Dr. Who?, I’m Gonna Spend My Christmas With A Dalek, Doctor in Distress, even the pop song, Doctorin’ the TARDIS. And now it seems, Doctor Who has returned to the world of music once more, this time to aid Children in Need.
It’s recently been announced that BBC One and BBC Children In Need are launching an entire album of songs, sung by some of the biggest stars of today, called BBC CHILDREN IN NEED: GOT IT COVERED.
Two of the artists included are none other than our current incarnation of the Doctor, Jodie Whittaker and a former one, David Tennant.
They aren’t the only two stars from those announced to have some connection to Doctor Who. We’ve also got Olivia Coleman from The Eleventh Hour, Jim Broadbent from The Curse of Fatal Death, Shaun Dooley from The Ghost Monument, and Suranne Jones from The Doctor’s Wife and The Sarah Jane Adventures, The Mona Lisa’s Revenge.
Other contributors include Helena Bonham Carter, Luke Evans, Adrian Lester, and Himesh Patel.
There will also be a special 60-minute programme on the making of the album ahead of the main show in November. It will follow the celebrities as they head to Abby Road and Rak, two legendary recording studios in London. The group will receive help from legendary music producers and song-writers, Guy Chambers and Jonathan Quarmby.
Vocal coach, Mark De-Lisser will be on hand to assist the singers and we will then go to a number of small organisations who help make young lives better to see their support first-hand.
Mel Balac, Executive Producer and Creative Director at BBC Studios, says:
“Many of the actors have said trying to nail the role of recording artist has been their most challenging role yet. The personally curated playlist that is being created in aid of Pudsey will be big on musical surprises and laughs, while highlighting the fantastic charities and causes BBC Children in Need supports. Bring on the drama!”
Children in Need is designed to help disadvantaged children and young people in the UK. And with a number of big named stars from Doctor Who, theatre and television shows, this seems like a great way to donate a little money to a great cause!
