Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Specials to be Released on DVD and Blu-ray Steelbook in December

The three 60th anniversary Doctor Who specials, starring David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor, will be available on DVD and steelbook in early December — which ma come as a surprise, given that physical discs will need to be pressed before the episodes are even broadcast on BBC1, iPlayer, and Disney+.

What’s more, it’s been confirmed that the release will have bonus content too:

  • Rachel Talalay’s Scene Breakdown
  • Chanya Button’s Scene Breakdown
  • Tom Kingsley’s Scene Breakdown
  • The Star Beast Behind The Scenes
  • The Fourteenth Doctor Reveal
  • Wild Blue Yonder Behind The Scenes
  • The Giggle Behind The Scenes
  • The Giggle In-vision Commentary

  • David and Catherine’s Flashbacks

  • Neil Patrick Harris Introduces the Toymaker

Fingers crossed they’ll include new spin-off Doctor Who Unleashed, which is in the same vein as the cancelled Doctor Who Confidential, which ran from 2005 to 2011.

The DVD and steelbook will definitely include The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder, and The Giggle, which will air on BBC1 on 25th November, 2nd December, and 9th December, respectively.

Catherine Tate is also returning as Donna Noble, in a cast that also includes Yasmin Finney as Rose Noble, Jacqueline King as Sylvia Noble, Ruth Madeley as Shirley Anne-Bingham, Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart, and Neil Patrick Harris as the Toymaker, a baddie unseen on TV since the First Doctor era…

Look, streaming services like Disney+ and iPlayer are great, but physical media is better. For one, you actually own that content; for another, it can’t be changed — digital copies of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, for instance, had some scenes tweaked since its cinema release.

So it’s fantastic to see Doctor Who under Bad Wolf Productions giving a big thumbs-up to physical media again, reenforcing its importance in an increasingly ephemeral society. The steelbook will no doubt sell out fast and scalpers on eBay will demand ridiculous prices, so pre-order your copy today if you want to guarantee yourself a copy!
