Yasmin Finney Confirms That Ncuti Gatwa Will Be in Doctor Who’s 60th Anniversary Specials

Ahead of her upcoming appearances in Doctor Who and the new series of the fantastic Heartstopper, actress Yasmin Finney spoke to The Standard, not only about Heartstopper but her upcoming role as Donna’s daughter, Rose. Most interesting of all was learning she’ll be sharing scenes with the new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa…

Now, I think there is a lot of things we haven’t even had an inkling of in trailers, including Ncuti having a much bigger role in the 60th anniversary than the trailers have seemed to suggest; I don’t think it’ll just be David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor. I think Bonnie Langford has a role in it (so far, she’s only confirmed for the Series 14 finale) and I think that we’ll be meeting Ruby Sunday, the Fifteenth Doctor’s companion, long before the Christmas Special.

And Yasmin Finney has seemingly confirmed some of this in her interview saying that she has some shared scenes with Ncuti Gatwa.

“We’re absolutely intertwined, and I think we complement each other so well.”

Maybe the Fifteenth Doctor sort of takes Rose as a companion or under his protection and the Fourteenth Doctor and Donna have to follow them to find out what’s going on? But just from this quote, it seems that both Yasmin Finney and Ncuti Gatwa are going to have a lot more to do with each other and the three stories celebrating the upcoming anniversary than we may have first thought. One rumour even suggests that Rose will be travelling with the Fifteenth Doctor, despite the fact we know that his companion is set to be Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday! But who knows: I think Rose Noble (Temple-Noble?) will be joining the ranks of characters we wish had been companions.

And it’s nice to know that Yasmin was a fan of Doctor Who long before she was set to star in it, saying that when she was growing up, Doctor Who was (and still is) the crème de la crème of television. One final question that The Standard had for her was when would she like to travel to if she had a TARDIS.

“If I could go back to any decade? I love the Eighties — the big Afros, the flares, the roller-skates, the bold make-up. Sure, there were riots and movements, but everything felt pure and real.”

I have to agree: one period I’d love to go back to is the 1980s — I love the colours, the big clothes, hairdos, makeup, songs, movies, and television shows. Maybe she’ll get a chance to travel with the Doctor and will go back to the ’80s, fulfilling Yasmin’s wish!

For anyone who wants to see Yasmin Finney in something before she appears in The Star Beast in November, then definitely check out Heartstopper on Netflix. The first season is already available and as each episode runs for half-an-hour, you can binge the whole thing in one day! The second series is due to be released on 3rd August 2023.
