Pearl Mackie has said she’d be happy to return to Doctor Who, and reflected on so many cameos in The Power of the Doctor.
When asked about coming back as companion, Bill Potts, Pearl said:
“The thing about Doctor Who is that no door is ever really closed, you know? Even with that last [Jodie Whittaker] episode [The Power of the Doctor], there are so many previous Doctors that live on, and those companions… I didn’t even know that we’d ever see them again.
“So I feel like with the way this show works, it’s always open. It’s such a wonderful thing to be a part of, so I wouldn’t say no, as it were, but also, it depends. I don’t know if they want me to come back.”
She is, of course, referring to the “Companions Anonymous” scene, which saw a few of the Doctor’s friends meeting up and talking about the Time Lord. Their number included newer companions like Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill) and Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh), mixing with 20th Century Who characters like Ace (Sophie Aldred), Jo Grant (Katy Manning), and Ian Chesterton (William Russell). Plus, Mel Bush (Bonnie Langford), who’s coming back for the Series 14 finale with Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor!
So there’s certainly a precedent for companions coming back. And Bill Potts seems a perfect candidate: she was only in one season, with Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor and Matt Lucas’ Nardole, but had the potential for so much more — especially considering she learned some secrets about the Doctor and the TARDIS quite late on in her run, i.e. that the TARDIS translates languages, which she found out in The Eaters of Light, her penultimate adventure.
I loved Bill, so would welcome her back. I find Series 10 a really underrated season, so I’d grab at any chance of Ms Potts’ return and a re-evaluation of Capaldi’s last run of stories.
