David Tennant Addresses Rumours He’s Returning as the Tenth Doctor (Or Maybe the Fourteenth)

David Tennant has addressed the rumours that he’ll come back to Doctor Who now that Russell T Davies is back as showrunner.

The actor, who played the Tenth Doctor regularly between 2005 and 2010, then again in 2013 for the 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, was asked whether he’s returning. And Tennant replied:

“I’ve learned through bitter experience that there’s not any point in even answering because whatever I say is spun by whoever wants to hear it. So there’s no point in me denying it, there’s no point in me confirming it, there’s no point in me fudging it. Whatever I say will become whatever the internet wants it to be.”

Clearly, this means he’s returning.

His comments came at the German Comic Con Spring 2022, which took place over the past weekend (23rd- 24th April 2022); the expo’s other guests included David Morrissey (The Next Doctor), Teri Hatcher (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman), and Alyssa Milano (Charmed).

It was optimistic to expect a definite answer from David, of course, but hey, it’s always worth a try!

The rumour mill kicked into gear when Davies was announced as coming back as showrunner, a position he left with Tennant’s final story, The End of Time, and since then, there’s been a great deal of speculation that Tennant would return too, as either the Tenth Doctor or even the Fourteenth, taking over from Jodie Whittaker.

We don’t have any answers either, I’m afraid, although the smart money is on David being in the 60th anniversary special, or at least part of the celebrations, in November 2023. But that’s a way off: we’re yet to actually see Whittaker regenerate.

We also hear that a Fourteenth Doctor announcement might come in May, so let’s wait and see…
